I did quite enjoy my time doing my masters (I honestly did miss seeing my monthly income get giro-ed into my bank account though!). The people I met were good people- generally nice and unassuming. It’s terribly geeky for me to admit this but I did enjoy the classes I took. Philosophy was a little less daunting than I thought (at least I now sorta know what kind of ontological orientation I am inclined towards and I can quite happily tell people the story of how candle wax inspired the famous “Cogito Ergo Sum”). I do hope I can stay in touch with the wonderful people I’ve met though. School does help reinstate your faith in people sometime after you become sardonic (thanks to interactions with certain people).

Time soon to embark on another part of my life journey- work. In all honestly, some parts of it excite me, some parts make me nervous and some parts of it I think I may dread (for some reason, I seem to have blocked out all the unpleasant things about work except for doing OT. hee).

Deployment interviews are over and it’s just time to wait to see where fate (or rather the central agency) decides to send me to. The choices I finally put down all offer somewhat different things (or at least from my perspective) and I think there are different things to learn and take way from each one of them. People have been offering all sorts of advice which made me rather confused as I was contemplating which organisations to consider and to express interest in. I’d like to think each of the choices I’ve indicated in the end offer something different and I guess no matter where I end up, I will always learn something (I guess even if I end up in a terrible portfolio with a horrible management, I learn how not to engage in horrible management in the future!). I have an inkling which organisation has expressed the strongest interest in me and that I’m most likely to end up there, so I’m kind of mentally prepared.

I’m not going to go and say that I can speak for a divine being and say this is some sort of punishment upon the ‘foul foul humans/miscreants”. Personally I would like to think instead of it being a punishment, these tragedies bring to light certain good in human. We see how people from all over the world rallied to try to help Japan, New Zealand or some other country that has fallen upon hard times because of these disasters. We see how seemingly ordinary workers at Fukushima willingly and stoically decide to sacrifice their lives in a desperate bid to save the lives of others and minimise damages from nuclear fallout. Volunteers and rescue workers are heading in to these dangerous zones to try to save as many people as possible. Those without expertise try to help in whatever little ways that they can, be it through monetary means or simply saying a prayer for the victims of these disasters.

As far away as we are, I’m sure many of us share in a way the sorrow of the people. Our hearts ache and our eyes get teary when we hear about how people are risking their lives to save others or read about the acts of heroism performed at these sites. Such reactions remind us that instinctively, we care and we feel for other humans whether or not we speak the same language, share the same culture or even the same skin colour.

And so, I got my mum to listen to it (yes, I make her listen to mashups and tunes that I like) and was explaining how this is a mashup of MJ’s Thriller and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Heads Will Roll. Then I decided to sit her through the Thriller MV since it’s considered an iconic MV that transformed the standard and MV landscape.

As the video was loading, I was explaining that it showcased MJ’s other expertise (other than singing), so the conversation went like this:

Me: Yes, see this video, Thriller, it showcases MJ’s other expertise. I mean other than singing lah.

Mum: You mean turning into a white guy?

Me:… I meant dancing.

So now you know which side of the fmaily I get my snarky side from.
